Fritillaria meleagris var. unicolor subvar. alba

This charming but hard to find British native is known for its beautiful nodding white bell-shaped flowers that emerge in April and can last into May.  Dangling from short stems and flanked with grass-like foliage, they look delightful shining out from a woodland glade or partially shaded area of the garden but will also naturalise well in grass.    For greater impact plant them in swathes rather than as single plants.

Low maintenance, they can cope with more sun but need a fertile, humus-rich but well-drained soil that remains cool and slightly moist in the summer to thrive.  We love to combine them with similarly demure spring flowering plants such as Anenome blanda, Geranium x cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’, Veronica and Hellebores.
